MONTREAL- While many Montreal students will have a snow day today, commuters are having a tough time getting to work on icy roads.
About 17 centimetres of snow fell Tuesday, followed by freezing rain which continued this morning. The rain turned to light snow around 7 a.m. in some places while a temperature of minus 6 degrees Celsius is expected later today, according to Environment Canada meteorologists.
Falling branches caused power failures for about 15,000 Montrealers this morning, Hydro QUebec says. Notre Dame de Grace and Montreal West were particularly affected.
The following schools in the English Montreal School Board will be closed to students and staff today due to power failures: Edinburgh Elementary, Royal Vale School, Marymoiunt Academy and Willingdon Elementary.
Vanguard schools, Ms Edgars and Ms Cramps School, Queen of Angels Academy, and most schools in the Sir Wilfred Laurier School Board are also closed for weather reasons. Many other schools are also announcing closures this morning; please check with your school for updated information.
Transport Quebec is urging motorists to be cautious on highways 10, 15, 20, 35, 40 and 132, which have icy patches.
